SeePantry is here: see what you have, use what you buy

Hi there! I'm Jordan, the solo developer behind SeePantry. Today I'm thrilled to share that SeePantry is live on both the App Store and Google Play. It started with a frustration I think a lot of people share: I'd buy groceries with the best intentions, lose track of what was in the fridge, and end up throwing food away a week later — or sometimes I'd just buy more than I needed. It's a universal problem: the average household tosses around $1,500 of food a year, not because people don't care, but because it's genuinely hard to keep track.

SeePantry is my answer to that. It's a kitchen tracker that does the tedious part for you, then quietly nudges you toward using what you already have before it goes bad. It also warns you before you buy something you already have at home, and helps you buy only the right quantity so you don't overbuy.

Now, you might ask: why another app, instead of just using an existing one? I did my research and tried a handful of them, and my conclusion was that they were all passive trackers that demanded a lot of input from me. A few specific gaps:

  1. When a food was about to expire, they would just notify me — without suggesting the best course of action to take.
  2. They didn't reflect kitchen reality: sometimes an item had expired, or I'd forgotten to mark it as used, and the app never caught up.
  3. No reliable way to track impact — dollars saved or lost, or CO₂ caused or prevented.
  4. Limited ways to add items and start tracking them.
  5. Move items between pantry, fridge, and freezer and they would not recalculate expiration dates — or warn you about the safety of, say, moving something from the freezer to the counter.
  6. If you cooked a meal from what was about to expire, there was no way to deduct those ingredients from what you have.

SeePantry handles all of these — and then some.

Add groceries five ways

The fastest way to abandon a tracking app is typing everything in by hand. So SeePantry gives you five ways to add items, and does the data entry for you:

  • Snap a photo of a grocery receipt — items, prices, categories, and expiration dates are filled in automatically.
  • Photograph your fridge and let it recognize what it sees.
  • Scan a barcode (always free, even on the free plan).
  • Add by voice — just say what you bought.
  • Or type it in the classic way.

Never waste food again

Once your kitchen is in the app, color-coded expiration indicators show what's fresh, expiring soon, or past due at a glance. Kitchen Copilot surfaces what needs attention most — what to eat first, what to freeze, what duplicates to skip at the store, and the right portion or quantity to buy based on how you actually use things. Every suggestion is advisory; you stay in control, and every action is undoable in five seconds.

Cook from what you already own

SeePantry ranks thousands of recipes by how many ingredients you already have, prioritizing the ones using items that are about to expire. Hands-free Cook Mode reads each step aloud, runs timers, and advances on its own — so you can cook without touching your phone. And when you're done, you can deduct the ingredients you just cooked from what's in your kitchen.

See what you save

Every time you use something instead of wasting it, SeePantry counts the dollars saved, items rescued, and CO₂ avoided — backed by EPA data. Watching that number climb turns out to be a surprisingly good motivator.

More than a tracker

Beyond the kitchen itself, SeePantry comes with a smart shopping list that warns you before you double-buy, a weekly meal planner, and recipe ideas drawn from what you already own. You can share a kitchen, list, and meal plan with your whole household, and it all syncs across your devices. It's fully translated into 15 languages, works beautifully on iPad, and ships with dark mode plus full VoiceOver and TalkBack support from day one.

This is just the start

SeePantry is built by one person who uses it every single day, and it's improving constantly. If you try it, I'd genuinely love your feedback — there's an in-app Ideas board where you can suggest and vote on what comes next.

See what you have. Use what you buy. Waste less, spend less.

SeePantry is free to download on the App Store and Google Play. Thanks for being here at the start.
